Proper window installation starts by checking the rough opening for size, level, plumb, structural support and signs of moisture damage. Across Canada, the fundamentals of window installation remain similar, but the governing code edition and detailed requirements can vary. Climate exposure also changes the design pressures placed on the opening. Consequently, installers should verify the authority having jurisdiction, the adopted code, the wall assembly and the window manufacturer’s instructions before selecting an installation detail.
In British Columbia, window installation must be coordinated with the BC Building Code provisions that apply to the project and wall assembly. For Part 9 exterior walls, flashing requirements address water management at openings, including conditions where sill flashing is required.
